Hire marketing automation developers who build the logic behind every lead.
TekRecruiter is a marketing automation staffing agency focused solely on technology and engineering roles at tech and SaaS companies. What is a marketing automation developer?
A marketing automation developer builds the technical side of a marketing platform such as HubSpot, Marketo Engage or Salesforce Marketing Cloud: lead scoring, nurture and lifecycle programs, forms and tracking, custom code, and the sync with the CRM. An architect designs the data model and integrations across those systems. A marketing operations manager runs the programs and the team; the developer builds what they run on.

- Builds programs, scoring, custom code and CRM sync on HubSpot, Marketo or Marketing Cloud.
- Marketing automation architect

What companies hire marketing automation developers to do.
Marketing automation work comes in projects with deadlines, which is why this market runs on contracts. These are the projects behind our searches.
01 · Platform migration
Move platforms without losing history.
Marketo to HubSpot, HubSpot to Marketing Cloud, or two instances merged after an acquisition, with programs, scoring, assets and engagement history carried over.
- Field and lifecycle mapping before anything moves
- Parallel run, then cutover with sales and marketing aligned
- HubSpot
- Marketo Engage
- Salesforce Marketing Cloud
- Salesforce
- SQL
02 · Lead scoring and lifecycle
Sales gets the leads worth calling.
Fit and behavior scoring, lifecycle stages and MQL-to-SQL handoffs that sales agrees with, rebuilt when the old model stopped predicting anything.
- Scoring tested against closed-won history
- Lifecycle stages that match the CRM’s
- Marketo Engage
- HubSpot
- Salesforce
- Account Engagement (Pardot)
03 · CRM sync
Marketing and sales on the same record.
Bidirectional sync with Salesforce or HubSpot CRM, with field ownership, deduplication and campaign attribution handled so neither side overwrites the other.
- Sync errors monitored, not discovered by sales
- Campaign influence and attribution data sales can see
- Salesforce
- HubSpot
- Marketo Engage
- Workato
- Zapier
04 · Nurture and lifecycle programs
Programs that run without hand-holding.
Triggered, multi-step programs for onboarding, nurture, renewal and re-engagement, built as reusable templates with tokens and dynamic content.
- Program templates the marketing team can clone safely
- Suppression, consent and preference management built in
- Marketo Engage
- HubSpot workflows
- Journey Builder
- AMPscript
05 · Custom code and data
The parts the point-and-click tools can’t do.
Custom-coded workflow actions, webhooks, data extensions and SQL queries, plus API integrations with product data, webinars and events.
- HubSpot custom code actions and serverless functions
- Marketing Cloud SQL, AMPscript and SSJS
- HubSpot API
- JavaScript
- AMPscript
- SQL
- Marketo REST API
06 · Architecture and cleanup
An instance someone can maintain.
An architect’s review of an instance that grew by accident: naming, folder structure, program templates, data model and a plan to retire what no longer runs.
- Documentation and governance the next admin can follow
- Database hygiene and deliverability restored
- Marketo Engage
- HubSpot
- Salesforce Marketing Cloud
- Adobe Experience Manager
What to know before you hire a marketing automation developer.
Whether or not you work with us, these are the questions worth settling before a marketing automation search begins.
What does a marketing automation developer cost in 2026?
In TekRecruiter’s 2026 marketing automation roles, developers billed at an average of $85 an hour and architects at $95 an hour, on site in South Florida and remote. HubSpot developers billed about $88 an hour. These are bill rates, covering the consultant’s pay and our fee. Full tables: 2026 Tech Salary & Rate Guide.
Contract or full time?
For this role, contract. Every marketing automation role we worked in 2026 was contract or contract-to-hire; we didn’t have a single direct-hire search for it. Contract fits migrations, rebuilds and campaign seasons. Contract-to-hire fits when you expect to keep the person once the project ends.
Developer or architect?
Hire a developer when the design is sound and the work is building: programs, scoring changes, custom code and integrations. Hire an architect when the instance itself is the problem: a migration, a merger of instances, or scoring and lifecycle stages that sales no longer trusts.
HubSpot, Marketo or Marketing Cloud experience?
Hire for your platform. The concepts carry over, but the build doesn’t: Marketo developers work in programs, tokens and smart lists; Marketing Cloud developers write SQL, AMPscript and SSJS; HubSpot developers use workflows, custom code actions and the API. For a migration, you need depth in both platforms.
How should you interview a marketing automation developer?
Ask them to walk through a scoring model they built and how they proved it worked against closed deals. Then ask how a lead moves from form fill to the CRM, and what happens when the sync fails. Certifications show platform knowledge; the walkthrough shows judgment.
On site or remote?
Both work. In 2026 about half of the marketing automation roles we worked were on site in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, and the rest were remote, with consultants in New York and Ohio. Remote consultants work your hours and your tools.
Why marketing automation searches go wrong.
Marketing automation sits between marketing, sales and engineering, and the wrong hire falls through the gap. These are the misses we hear about most.
- 01
An operator hired to build.
Runs campaigns well, but can’t write the integration or rebuild the scoring.
- 02
A permanent search for project work.
Months spent recruiting for a migration that had a deadline.
- 03
The wrong platform.
A strong Marketo developer dropped into Marketing Cloud SQL and AMPscript.
- 04
Sync nobody owns.
Marketing and the CRM disagree, and each team blames the other.

We trace one lead from form fill to closed deal.
We’re technical people, and we walk every marketing automation consultant through a lead’s full path in a system they built: the form, the scoring, the program logic, the sync to the CRM and what sales saw at the end. It shows fast whether someone built it or only ran it. Every consultant we present meets our HEART standard.
- The build: scoring, programs and integrations they designed themselves, not only operated.
- Platform depth: hands-on work in your platform, including the custom code and data layer.
- CRM sync: field ownership, deduplication and what they did when the sync broke.
- Proof it worked: how they tested scoring or programs against pipeline and closed deals.

What we screen out.
The patterns that separate a marketing automation builder from someone who has only sent the emails.
Only campaign execution
Built emails and lists, but never scoring, lifecycle or integration logic.
Scoring nobody tested
Points assigned by instinct and never checked against closed deals.
No view of the CRM
Can’t explain field ownership or what happens to a lead after sync.
Platform-hopping résumé
Lists every tool, with no depth in the one you run.
No governance
Leaves behind programs and fields with no naming or documentation.
Ignores consent and deliverability
No plan for opt-outs, preferences or domain reputation.
Developer and architect.
Marketing automation contracts split into two levels. Here is what each should own, and what it bills.

- Custom code, webhooks and API integrations
- CRM sync fixes and data hygiene

Contract-to-hire
Marketing automation hiring questions, answered.
How much does a contract marketing automation developer cost?
In TekRecruiter’s 2026 contracts, marketing automation developers billed at an average of $85 an hour and architects at $95 an hour. Should we hire marketing automation talent on contract or full time?
In 2026 this market ran on contracts: every marketing automation role we worked was contract or contract-to-hire. Contract fits migrations, rebuilds and campaign seasons; contract-to-hire fits when you expect to keep the person after the project.
What does a marketing automation developer do?
A marketing automation developer builds the technical side of a marketing platform such as HubSpot, Marketo Engage or Salesforce Marketing Cloud: lead scoring, nurture and lifecycle programs, forms and tracking, custom code, and the sync with the CRM.
What is the difference between a marketing automation developer and an architect?
A developer builds inside an existing design: programs, scoring changes, code and integrations. An architect designs the instance: the data model, lifecycle stages, scoring approach and how the platform connects to the CRM and warehouse. Architects billed about $10 an hour more in our 2026 contracts.
Do you have marketing automation consultants in South Florida?
Yes. In 2026 about half the marketing automation roles we worked were on site in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, at an average of $85 an hour for developers and $95 for architects. The rest were remote.
Which platforms do your consultants work on?
HubSpot, Adobe Marketo Engage, Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Account Engagement (Pardot), plus the Salesforce and HubSpot CRM integrations around them and Adobe Experience Manager for web content.
What is the HEART standard?
HEART is the standard we screen every candidate against, beyond skills: high agency, execution, accountability, resourcefulness and transparency. It describes people who take ownership, turn ideas into results and move the business forward. See the standard.
