Hire sales engineers who win the technical evaluation.

TekRecruiter is a sales engineer recruiting agency focused solely on technology and engineering roles at tech and SaaS companies. We know deals are won in discovery and the proof of concept, not the slide deck, so you hire the solutions engineer the buyer’s architects trust, who scopes the POC to the problem and closes the evaluation. Sales engineering, defined

What is a sales engineer?

A sales engineer, also called a solutions engineer or pre-sales engineer, is the technical expert on a deal. They run technical discovery, build demos and proofs of concept, and answer the buyer’s security, integration and architecture questions, so the account executive can close. A solutions or sales engineer demonstrates and scopes the product before the sale; a forward deployed engineer builds after it.

Sales engineer
The technical expert on the deal: discovery, demos, proofs of concept, and security and architecture reviews.
Account executive
Owns the deal and the quota from discovery to close, and brings in technical help for the deep questions.
Proof of concept (POC)
A time-boxed technical trial against the buyer’s own success criteria, agreed before it starts.
The work

What companies hire sales engineers to do.

Most sales engineering searches start with deals that stall once the buyer’s technical team gets involved. These are the mandates behind them.

01 · Technical discovery

Find the real problem before the demo.

Discovery with the buyer’s engineers and architects: current stack, pain, constraints and what success would look like, captured so the whole deal team works from it.

  • Technical win criteria agreed with the buyer, in writing
  • Red flags raised early, not after a failed POC
  • Gong
  • Salesforce
  • HubSpot
  • Notion

02 · Demos

A demo built for this buyer.

Demos that show the buyer’s own workflow and data shape, not the standard tour, with environments that don’t break on the call.

  • Demo environments and data sets maintained like product
  • Tailored in hours, not days
  • Consensus
  • Walnut
  • Postman
  • Docker
  • AWS

03 · Proofs of concept

POCs with an exit, not an open-ended trial.

Scoped, time-boxed evaluations against success criteria agreed upfront, with integration work light enough to finish in weeks.

  • Success criteria and timeline signed off before kickoff
  • Win rate on POCs tracked and reviewed
  • Python
  • REST APIs
  • Terraform
  • Snowflake
  • Kubernetes

04 · Security and architecture

Clear the review that stalls the deal.

Security questionnaires, architecture diagrams and data-flow reviews answered accurately and fast, with the buyer’s security team treated as a stakeholder, not an obstacle.

  • SOC 2, SSO, data residency and access-control questions handled
  • Reusable answers kept current in a response library
  • Loopio
  • Responsive
  • Vanta
  • Okta
  • Lucidchart

05 · Deal strategy

Partner with the AE on the whole deal.

Working the deal with the account executive: mapping technical stakeholders, sequencing the evaluation and handling competitive objections.

  • Technical champions identified and equipped
  • Competitive positioning grounded in real product differences
  • Salesforce
  • Gong
  • Clari
  • Slack

06 · Handoff to delivery

What was sold is what gets built.

A clean handoff to implementation, customer success or forward deployed engineers, so scope agreed in the POC survives into onboarding.

  • Documented scope, integrations and risks at signature
  • Feedback from deals routed to product
  • Jira
  • Salesforce
  • Notion
  • Linear
Before you hire

What to know before you hire a sales engineer.

Whether or not you work with us, these are the questions worth settling before a sales engineering search begins.

  1. What does a sales engineer cost in 2026?

In TekRecruiter’s 2026 South Florida searches, mid-level solutions and sales engineers earned about $150,000 base and senior engineers about $175,000 base, both plus commission. Nearshore sales engineers in Latin America billed $50–$60 an hour. Full tables: 2026 Tech Salary & Rate Guide.

  2. How should a sales engineer be paid?

Traditionally, salary plus a bonus. In 2026 we see more plans paying commission tied to deal outcomes, often a base-to-variable split around 70/30 or 80/20. That makes offers harder to compare, so model what the plan pays at target and how much of it depends on the SE versus the AE.

  3. How should you interview a sales engineer?

Give them your product and a realistic buyer, and ask for a short discovery call, then a demo built from what they learned. Watch whether they ask before they show. Then ask about a POC they lost, what the success criteria were and what they would scope differently.

  4. How many sales engineers do you need?

It depends on deal complexity. Teams selling complex technical products often run one SE for every two to four account executives; simpler products stretch further. If SEs are the bottleneck on demos and POCs, or AEs are running technical calls alone, you’re under-staffed.

  5. Sales engineer or forward deployed engineer?

A solutions or sales engineer demonstrates and scopes the product before the sale; an FDE builds after it. If deals stall on the technical evaluation, hire an SE. If customers sign and then struggle to get into production, hire an FDE. Many AI companies need both.

  6. Can sales engineers work nearshore?

Yes. Nearshore sales engineers in Latin America work US hours and billed $50–$60 an hour in our 2026 searches, about $104,000–$125,000 a year. They fit demos, POC builds and security reviews well; senior SEs who own enterprise relationships are usually US-based.

Sound familiar?

Why sales engineer searches go wrong.

A sales engineer has to be credible with engineers and useful to sellers. These are the misses we hear about most.

  • 01

    A great demo, no discovery.

Shows the product well, but never finds out what the buyer needed.

  • 02

    POCs that never end.

No success criteria, so evaluations drift for months.

  • 03

    An engineer who can’t sell.

Deep technically, but loses the room with business buyers.

  • 04

    A comp plan nobody understood.

The offer looked strong until the candidate modeled the commission.

Our approach

We ask about the POC they lost.

We’re technical people, and we walk every sales engineer through deals they worked: the buyer’s problem, the technical objection, what they built to answer it, and how the evaluation ended. Losses tell us more than wins. Every candidate we present meets our HEART standard.

  • Discovery first: how they learned the buyer’s environment and set win criteria before any demo.
  • Technical depth: architecture, integration and security, discussed at the level of the buyer’s engineers.
  • POC discipline: scope, timeline and success criteria, and how they closed or walked away.
  • Comp fit: how past plans paid, so the base, bonus and commission make sense before the offer.

The HEART standard

What we look for beyond skills and experience, in every candidate we present.

  1. High agencyPeople who see what needs to be done and act without waiting to be told.
  2. ExecutionPeople who turn ideas into results.
  3. AccountabilityPeople who own the outcome, not just their piece of the work.
  4. ResourcefulnessPeople who figure things out when the answer isn’t obvious.
  5. TransparencyPeople who communicate clearly, honestly, and early.
Red flags

What we screen out.

The patterns that separate a sales engineer who wins evaluations from one who gives tours.

  • Demos before discovery

Leads with features before learning what the buyer is trying to solve.

  • No POC success criteria

Lets evaluations run open-ended, which usually ends in no decision.

  • Can’t go a level deeper

Stalls when the buyer’s architect asks how it actually works.

  • Wins with no numbers

Can’t name deal sizes, win rates or their role in the outcome.

  • Takes over the deal

Competes with the AE instead of working the deal as a team.

  • Says yes to everything

Commits to features and integrations the product can’t deliver.

Levels

Mid-level, senior and principal sales engineers.

Level is about the size and complexity of the deals, not years. Here is what each level should own, and what it pays.

Questions

Solutions and sales engineer hiring questions, answered.

What does a solutions or sales engineer do?

A solutions or sales engineer is the technical expert on a sales team. They run technical discovery, build demos and proofs of concept, answer security, integration and architecture questions, and help the account executive win the deal.

How much does a sales engineer make in 2026?

In TekRecruiter’s 2026 South Florida searches, mid-level solutions and sales engineers earned about $150,000 base and senior engineers about $175,000 base, both plus commission. More packages now pay commission and bonus tied to outcomes. See the 2026 Tech Salary & Rate Guide.

Do you recruit sales engineers in Miami and South Florida?

Yes. Our 2026 sales engineering searches ran across Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, at about $150,000 base for mid-level and $175,000 for senior roles, plus commission.

Do sales engineers get commission?

Increasingly, yes. Many sales engineers were traditionally paid salary and bonus, but in 2026 we see more plans paying commission based on deal outcomes. That makes offers harder to structure, so we model the plan with you before the offer goes out.

Can we hire sales engineers nearshore?

Yes. Nearshore solutions engineers in Latin America billed $50–$60 an hour in our 2026 searches, about $104,000–$125,000 a year, working US hours. See Nearshore.

What is the difference between a sales engineer and a forward deployed engineer?

A solutions or sales engineer demonstrates and scopes the product before the sale; an FDE builds after it. FDEs spend most of their time coding and integrating inside the customer’s systems. Many AI companies need both, and we scope which one a role really is before we search.

What is the difference between a sales engineer and an account executive?

The account executive owns the deal, the relationship and the quota. The sales engineer owns the technical win: discovery, demos, proofs of concept and security reviews. On complex products they work as a pair. A technical account executive covers more of the technical ground alone.

What is the HEART standard?

HEART is the standard we screen every candidate against, beyond skills: high agency, execution, accountability, resourcefulness and transparency. It describes people who take ownership, turn ideas into results and move the business forward. See the standard.
