What senior engineers cost in Brazil.
Two numbers from our June 2026 benchmark: the midpoint base salary US-headquartered employers pay English-fluent senior engineers in Brazil, and the all-in hourly rate for the same profile through TekRecruiter, which covers pay, employer costs, compliance, insurance and the search. Brazil is the second-highest-paid market we track, after Mexico.

Why hiring in Brazil on your own goes wrong.
Brazil has the talent. The trouble usually starts with how the engineer is hired and who was chosen.
- 01
PJ contracts that look like employment.
Engineers paid through their own company but managed like staff, which Brazilian labor courts can reclassify, with years of back benefits.
- 02
A strong engineer on a first US job.
Talented, but still learning how US teams run standups, code review and pushback, on your time.
- 03
English that fades on calls.
Candidates who read documentation well and go quiet in a design review.
- 04
US pay for a São Paulo hire.
Budgets that drift until the Brazil engineer costs what a remote US engineer would.

We screen every Brazilian candidate in English, then walk them through a product they built: how it worked, what they owned and what they would change. You interview every engineer before anything is signed. Every engineer we present meets HEART, our standard beyond skills, and TekRecruiter, a U.S. staffing firm, is their employer of record.
- Working English: can they lead a design review or an incident call, not just follow one.
- Three-plus years at US companies: working directly for them, not rotating between clients at an IT services firm.
- Holistic product view: the whole product and its architecture, not just a list of frameworks.
- Employed by us: TekRecruiter contracts and pays the engineer and carries the compliance and insurance, so you aren’t hiring PJ contractors directly.

The HEART standard
What we look for beyond skills and experience, in every candidate we present.

Scope, interview, start from São Paulo.
Scope the role and the hours
Stack, seniority, English level and the overlap your team needs, agreed for both US daylight and standard time, since Brazil no longer shifts its clocks.
Interview a short list
Engineers from our Brazil network, screened in English and walked through a product they built. You interview every one.
Start, then lower the rate
Consultants start in as little as three days as TekRecruiter staff. After about a year, we can move them to our employer-of-record rate, with most of the recruiting fee removed.
What clients say.
When Brazil is the right country.
- East Coast and Central teams that want a full working day of overlap with a one- to two-hour offset.
- Companies hiring several senior engineers at once, where the depth of the Brazilian pool matters.
- Teams that want senior, English-fluent engineers at about half the cost of a US hire, not the cheapest engineer in the region.
- West Coast teams needing all-day overlap. São Paulo runs four to five hours ahead of Pacific time; Mexico or Colombia may fit better.
- Lowest-cost-first hiring. Colombia and Peru pay less; Brazil pays for its depth of senior talent.
- Roles that need US presence or clearance. Those stay US hires.

Hiring in Brazil, answered.
How much does a senior software engineer in Brazil cost?
In TekRecruiter’s June 2026 benchmark, US-headquartered employers paid senior engineers in Brazil a midpoint base of about $74,000 for front-end, $79,000 for back-end and $89,000 for SRE and DevOps. Through TekRecruiter, the same senior profiles cost about $45, $47 and $50 an hour all in, covering pay, employer costs, compliance, insurance and the search. See the 2026 Tech Salary & Rate Guide.
Why hire engineers in Brazil?
Scale and overlap. Brazil is Latin America’s largest country and economy, with about 213 million people and roughly 6.9 million developers on GitHub, the fourth most of any country. It is where about 70% of TekRecruiter’s more than 130 nearshore placements have been made. Engineers work one to two hours ahead of US Eastern time and cost about half as much as a US hire. In our placements, senior tech pay in Brazil also runs about 3–5% below Mexico.
Who employs the engineers you place in Brazil?
TekRecruiter does. As a U.S. staffing firm, we are the employer of record: we contract and pay each engineer and carry the compliance and insurance, so you are not hiring “PJ” contractors directly, a structure Brazilian labor courts often reclassify as employment. The engineer works under your day-to-day direction, so a few workplace obligations stay shared, as they would with any staffing partner.
What time zone do Brazilian engineers work in?
Most work on São Paulo time (UTC−3), which Brazil keeps year-round since it ended daylight saving in 2019. That puts them one hour ahead of US Eastern in summer and two hours ahead in winter, and four to five hours ahead of Pacific. We agree working hours with each engineer before the start.
Do Brazilian engineers speak English?
The ones we place do. Portuguese is Brazil’s first language, so we screen every candidate in English for the work they will actually do: design reviews, standups and incident calls, not just reading documentation.
Is Brazil or Mexico better for nearshore hiring?
It depends on your time zone and your budget. Mexico is the highest-paid market for senior engineers in our benchmark, and most of it sits one to three hours behind US Eastern, so it often suits West Coast teams. Brazil pays slightly less, has more developers on GitHub, and suits East Coast teams. Most of our nearshore placements are in Brazil.
Does TekRecruiter have an office in Brazil?
Yes. TekRecruiter has a secondary office in São Paulo; our headquarters is in Miami.
Can the rate come down after the first year?
Yes. Most engagements start on contract through TekRecruiter, often as a three- or six-month project, with the engineer working under your management. Once an engineer has worked with you for about a year, we can move them to our employer-of-record rate: they stay on our staff, and most of the recruiting fee comes out of the hourly rate. See staff augmentation.
What is the HEART standard?
HEART is the standard we screen every candidate against, beyond skills: high agency, execution, accountability, resourcefulness and transparency. It describes people who take ownership, turn ideas into results and move the business forward. See the standard.
